So just a warning, this WILL be gross, but it's just part of the birth process sometimes. I'm mainly writing this so I don't forget. I want to remember all details of my birth experience, good and bad. This is me just recollecting for myself, so read it if you want to.
In my last post I left off with Cason being born. Of course a few minutes later I delivered the placenta and the doctor checked to make sure everything was ok. Great news, I had NO TEARS! Woohoo! With Trinity the doctor performed a "routine" episiotomy that was difficult to heal from, so having no tears was great! I had my hour with Cason to bond and breastfeed and he got passed around to my family who managed to get there just 15 minutes after he was born! They tried so hard to make it here faster!! :) After that hour they took him to be measured and weighed and my wonderful labor and delivery nurse helped me get out of bed and get cleaned up. She was sooo sweet and showed me how to take care of everything down there. Then she wheeled me to my room.
The nurses kept coming in the room with pain medication that I didn't take because I felt great, partly from the adrenaline rush I'm sure! The nurses then kept a check on my bleeding to make sure it subsided, but it didn't. After a couple of hours they sent the doctor in and he wanted to put me on a medication to slow the bleeding and I decided that was a good idea at this point. After being on that medication for so many hours, nothing changed and I was feeling weak so they put me on a stronger medication and said I would definitely want the pain pills so I took them just because I was tired and weak at this point. A few hours later nothing had changed, I was still bleeding pretty bad so the doctor came in and had to nearly kill me, or so I thought! I forgot to say, that the nurses were periodically coming in and mashing my stomach to make sure my uterus was ok and the right size. This was uncomfortable when they did it, but when that male doctor did it, I nearly screamed. He was so rough! But nothing compared to what happened next. He had to go in and make sure all the placenta was out **WHILE mashing on my stomach....he did this for a good 5 minutes. It hurt WAY worse than labor and I nearly scratched his eyeballs out! I did scream and nearly squeezed the nurses hand off. It was awful! At one point I jerked up and came within inches of slapping the doctor...I'm not kidding. I wanted to LITERALLY scratch his eyeballs out! The poor nurse who was assisting him just looked on and gave me sympathetic looks while I squeezed the crap outta her hand. When it was over he apologized many times and left. Even though it was torture it did work, thankfully, and the bleeding subsided.
Later on my labor and delivery nurse came in to check on me. She heard what had happened and was very sympathetic. She didn't like the doctor to begin with but it had to be done. She said "He doesn't know what it's like to have a uterus!" She was great! After this the nurses change like every few hours it seemed and each one heard about my "traumatic experience" and gave some sympathy. But the best thing was as soon as each nurse found out I had Cason naturally their eyes got big and they said "Good for you!", "WOW!" After a few comments like that I asked a nurse, "Does no one have their kid naturally anymore?" She said it was very, very few people who did. I am saying this all to say that I don't think what I did was great or special (but I am proud of myself for sticking to my plan!), what I did was what my body is supposed to do. Oh yeah I did want to brag on myself about one other thing...the only pain medication I took was the few pills they gave me in the hospital and I only took those because they insisted several times. I'm glad I did, because the medication they gave me for bleeding did make it pretty painful "down there". And that's pretty much my story. Sorry everything is soooo freakin long! :D
**I have since found out that what most likely happened with my placenta was that the doctor "rushed" delivery of the placenta and probably tried to pull it out too soon. Wonderful reason #568 to let things happen naturally on their own.
